In ancient times along the Jurassic coast of Dorset in England, the widows and wives of the cliff top villages used to light a candle in the upper windows of their cottages. This was to guide the sailors, fishermen - and also smugglers - a safe journey to the shore, through the treacherous rocks that surrounded the seas and coastline.
